They may look alike, but they’re two very different animals.

An AV (Audio/Video or Home Theater) receiver not only powers your whole home theater system, it’s the brains behind the whole system. The AV receiver’s job is to receive, interpret, and then process the TV audio signal (via the cable or dish box, for example) coming into the house, before sending it along to its ultimate destination: the TV and speakers.

An AV receiver contains five or more amplifiers (at a minimum) to drive five or more speakers. Why so many? A typical home theater system has 5 speakers that, together, create surround sound… and each speaker requires its own separate audio signal from the AV receiver. These days, many home theaters have more than 5 speakers, including those that are Dolby Atmos-enabled. In fact, for the best-possible, mind-blowing effect, many home theater systems now include a dozen or more speakers, many of which are hidden and/or are built into walls and ceilings.

A stereo receiver contains 2 amplifiers (one for each channel), and is primarily used for listening to audio. (Think of channels as speakers. A channel is a dedicated circuitry for one audio source, and there are two when we’re talking about stereo.) The two amplifiers in a stereo receiver will power your two stereo speakers, and though you can connect a stereo receiver to a TV, you won’t get surround sound as a result.

(As you’re shopping, you may also run into integrated amps, which is really the same thing as a stereo receiver, minus the AM/FM tuner.)

Ultimately, it comes down to price and priorities. $800 will buy a darn good AV receiver with 4K video switching and Dolby Atmos. On the other hand, if music is a higher priority for you than movies with surround sound, that same $800 will buy you a super fine (better than darn good) 2-channel stereo receiver (but no surround sound).

Bottom line: AV receivers were designed and built primarily for TVs as a way to bring an authentic, cinema-like experience to the home. And given AV receivers do more than stereo receivers, you can always use your AV receiver for TV and music. On the flip side, like we said above, a stereo receiver and TV combination does not deliver surround sound on its own.

What to look for if you want wireless multi-room audio.

Many of the newest home theater receivers are easily controlled through an app on your iPhone, tablet, or computer. At your fingertips: full operational control from any room in the house. Often, these apps are customizable – you can tweak them so they “go” with your particular house. Take the HEOS by Denon app, for example. Instead of buttons, you can have pictures of your own rooms, so when it’s 9 PM and the party is really taking off, you don’t even have to think. It’s just “open app, see room, tap room, play music.” And because you’re doing it all through your home network, it doesn’t matter where your AV receiver is. (Meaning: You don’t have to point at anything like you do with a remote control.) Grandma could take over, no problem.

Receivers are often bigger than you think.

The most common questions we hear from customers.

It’s 9 PM and you want to watch “Game of Thrones,” but someone else wants to watch an old movie on DVD. A multi-zone capable receiver gets it done by allowing you to hook up multiple video sources — your cable or satellite box, Apple TV, a Blu-ray player, and so on – and then sending that signal out to two different TVs in two different rooms. You can even watch two live TV shows at the same time with one multi-zone receiver, though that requires an additional cable or satellite TV box.

Yes, but all AV receivers nowadays have automatic speaker calibration. Most do a good job, but the best automatic speaker calibration we’ve seen is in NAD surround receivers. They have Diarc Live Room Correction built-in, and the quality difference is like night and day — you can easily turn it on and off to test it out. (In the PA area? If you already have a home theater receiver and it’s anything over 5 years old, it’s time to upgrade. This way, you get the latest features like Dolby Atmos. And this is a good thing: The first time you hear a movie played through Dolby Atmos, your reaction will be “that’s what I always wanted to hear from Day 1” — absolute precise localization of every sound in each corner of the room. Translated: goosebumps!

Further, the number of new features in a typical new AV receiver is proportional to the number of new features in a typical new TV. In other words, though there’s no need to replace a stereo receiver that often, becausestereo is stereo; not much has changed. But you may want to replace your AV receiver when you get a new TV to take advantage of all the cool new stuff today’s TVs can do.

Is Atmos for Headphones legit? I bought a license on Dolby Access for my Series X and it sounds great with a decent pair of headphones (Audeze MM-100s) but from this article it sounds like you can’t actually have true surround sound without at least 5 distinct channels.

TOP 5 AV RECEIVERS 2021 If you’re building a home theater system, consider this guide the easiest way to find the right AV receiver for you! These are our top 5 AV receivers for 2021.

Shopping for an AV receiver for your home theater can be daunting, so we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 AV receivers you can buy TODAY that will fill all of your surround sound AND maybe your hi-fi needs. So, let’s jump into it!

THE RULES

Before we get started all of the receivers on this list had to meet three criteria. First, they had to sound great for both music AND movies! Second, they had to have support for the latest video formats and tech, because if we’re spending money we want to be as “future-proof” as possible. And third, they had to be “smart” receivers meaning you can connect them to your home’s wifi, or stream directly through them or to them in order to enjoy content the way a lot of people do nowadays. This also means they have support for streaming platforms like Spotify or the like. Now on with our list!

#5 Onkyo TX-NR5100

This sub $600 AV receiver truly has it all –no firmware updates required. While not as powerful as the Yamaha we just talked about, the ONKYO 5100’s 80 Watts per channel is still good enough to drive most mass-market speakers from the likes of Klipsch, Polk Audio, JBL and more to cinema-like levels. But don’t think that the sound quality is just LOUD with no finesse, it’s not. The 5100 is actually pretty refined when paired with speakers with a sensitivity of 89dB or higher with an impedance that doesn’t dip below 6 Ohms or so –it even sounds incredibly good for two channel listening! Warning - this receiver DOES NOT have a built-in phono preamp. If you want to enjoy the occasional record and your turntable does not already have a built-in phono preamp, this is NOT the receiver for you. The good news is, the 5100 supports 8K/60 and 4K/120 out of the box, so those of you with next gen gaming consoles like the PS5 or XBox Series X can enjoy gaming at higher resolutions and frame rates from day one.

I love this AV receiver. First off, the Marantz NR1711 doesn’t LOOK like an AV receiver in that it isn’t just a large black box with a bunch of nondescript buttons. The 1711 looks a lot like a Marantz integrated receiver, meaning you can hide it in plain sight. Because of its size you also don’t need specialty AV furniture to house it! Aside from its form factor, the 1711 is a very refined sounding receiver, with a rich, full-bodied sound that is very indicative of the Marantz brand. It is absolutely terrific in stereo making this one of the better hifi and home theater receivers on the market right now –especially if you have a budget vinyl rig as the built-in phono preamp is pretty good.

The X3700H from Denon borders on perfect for me. This 9.2 channel AV receiver has the requisite power to drive most any loudspeaker on the market, but if its 105 Watts isn’t enough, it has full preamp outputs for 11.2 channels, meaning you can add third party amplifiers to the 3700H for more power and flexibility. Those of you with difficult to drive speakers like Magnepans that want to expand into home theater, should potentially consider the 3700H. But on its own the 3700H sounds fantastic –especially when watching Dolby Atmos encoded films! The Audyssey room correction does a great job in tailoring your speakers’ sound to fit your room, providing for a clear and dynamic presentation!

Like the Marantz NR1711 the 3700H is ready for next gen video formats, though it is limited to just one HDMI input. That said, unlike other receivers on this list, if you have older video formats or players still hanging around your home, the 3700H will work with them and in some instances even upscale their video quality. Those of you who like vintage console gaming take note!

The Pioneer is somewhat a “baby” Onkyo RZ50, though it lacks a lot of the Onkyo (and Denon’s) expandability with respect to preamp outputs. So, if you’re looking for an AV receiver that is going to potentially allow you to grow your setup by adding third party amps and/or more channels beyond the 9.2 it offers, the Pioneer may not be for you. But if 9.2 channels gets it done the Pioneer is likely ALL the AV receiver 99% of you may ever need.

The RZ50 is arguably the best receiver on the market right now when you consider price and performance. There is little this receiver CAN’T DO. It is a 9.2 channel receiver with full preamp outs for 11.2 channels, meaning you can expand its capability and power over time if the internal 120 Watt per channel amps aren’t enough. In our tests the Onkyo’s power rating seem conservative. It drove even difficult to drive speakers like the PSB T600 towers with no problem! And the sound quality is so good! I love this receiver for both two channel listening as well as home theater. It’s Dolby Atmos performance is fantastic and among the best I’ve heard regardless of price. What’s more, the RZ50 comes with DIRAC Live built-in, which is arguably THE BEST room correction software in the game right now, and on most devices that support DIRAC will run you extra whereas with the RZ50 it is included!

Sony also developed a new capacitor for high power by creating a new block capacitor based on their extensive experience with developing sound quality capacitors with a focus on making sure the materials they used were of the highest quality but also created the highest quality sound.

They even went as far as to offset the position of the screw in the feet of the receiver. Sony did this to increase rigidity and improve resonance control. When you’re focusing on something as small as the foot of a receiver to make sure it’s not the entry point for unwanted vibration on “just a A/V receiver” you know that you’ve made the right decision in your purchase.
